Cal Wineries Depend on DTC Sales Too
Various industry sources have told Midwest Wine Press that they believe 80% to 90% of Midwestern wine is sold directly to the consumer, as opposed to through a distributor. While this may be a high percentage of direct to consumer sales, Wine and Vines reports that slightly more than half of California wine is sold through wine clubs or at the winery tasting room. This news comes as something of a surprise. Selling wine directly is more profitable, but the potential market is much smaller.
