According to the Southern Illinoisan, the first micro-distillery has opened near the popular Shawnee Hills Wine Trail. Grand River Spirits in Carbondale is owned by Karen Binder, who was formerly the executive director of the Illinois Grape and Wine Resources Council. Funding for this state organization to improve Illinois grape growing ended in 2004 and it was disbanded.
