Illinois State Fair Wine Competition Results

Nearly 400 wines were presented at the Illinois State Fair Wine Competition in Springfield, Illinois which was held June 25 through June 27th.  Galena Cellars Vineyard and Winery in Galena, Illinois captured three of the seven top awards.   When asked about Galena Cellar’s strong showing at the Competition, winemaker Christine Lawlor said,  “We’re pleased and and excited to be recognized, but it’s not just us who’s making great wine in Illinois.”   Lawlor, who graduated with a degree in enology and viticulture from Fresno State University during the 70’s when the California wine industry was emerging,  thinks the Midwest is poised for it’s own version of “Bottle Shock.”    “I experienced the growth of Napa Valley first hand and, in some ways,  the Midwest wine industry is at the same point in it’s evolution that California was just before it started growing rapidly.”
