Frost Damage Reported in Northeast Ohio

In this morning’s Ashtabula Star Beacon, writer Carl E. Feather reports some damage to the Lake Erie grape crop Monday night.    Feather said apples and peaches in some area orchards were virtually wiped out by temperatures as low as 22 degrees.  Please see: http://starbeacon.com/local/x1437240836/Fruit-trees-hit-hard-by-freeze-grapes-fare-better

Also Tuesday morning, David Scurlock, an Ohio State University Viticulture Outreach Specialist in Wooster, said that reports he received from vineyards in Northeastern Ohio indicated limited bud damage.  However, Scurlock said bud damage is not always immediately apparent.  At the Ohio State Research Vineyard in Wooster,  Scurlock said he noticed a “browning hue” this morning on LaCrescent and Marquette buds;   two varieties that Scurlock said are susceptible to spring frost.   The low temperature Monday night in Wooster was 24 degrees.
