San Francisco 2014 Competition Midwest Winners
Ferrante Winery was a “Sweepstake Winner” in the 2014 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition for its 2012 Vidal Blanc Ice Wine from the Grand River AVA in Ohio. The Sweepstake Winner title was awarded to only seven wines out of over 5,000 entries. (The SF Chronicle Wine Competition bills itself as the largest competition of American wines in the world.)
Another Midwest winery winning a top prize was Easley Winery. The Indianapolis winery was awarded Best in Class for their 2012 Traminette in the White Hybrid category.
Other notable wineries to take top medals were Chateau Grand Traverse which won two Gold Medals for different styles of the Old Mission winery’s 2012 Riesling.
Forty-Five North Winery in the Leelanau Peninsula won Double Gold for Rose of Cabernet Franc and Gold for their Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio blend.
In the fruit category, Kentucky’s Smith Berry Vineyard & Winery collected a host of medals including Best of Class for the NV Blackberry Wine.
Missouri’s St. James Winery won Double Gold in the Red Native American category for the winery’s 2012 Ozark Highlands Cynthiana. (St. James took home a total of 13 medals from the San Francisco Competition!)
Verterra Winery in the Leelanau Peninsula won Double Gold and Gold for their 2012 Rose of Pinot Noir and 2012 Riesling.
Blue Sky Vineyard in Illinois’ Shawnee Hills won Gold for their 2012 Viognier.
WaterFire Vineyards on Torch Lake won Silver and Bronze medals, a notable achievement for a relatively new Northern Michigan winery that is in an up and coming growing region.
White Pine Winery in St. Joseph, Michigan won two Silver Medals for Pinot Grigio and Riesling.
