Midwest Direct Wine Shipping Increases Dramatically
The Direct to Consumer Wine Shipping Report 2013 released today shows that the volume and value of wine shipped to customers from Midwestern states increased dramatically during 2012.
The report, by ShipCompliant and Wines & Vines, includes the Midwest in its ‘Rest of US’ category. The ‘Rest of US’ category experienced an almost 24% increase in the volume of direct shipping wine sales in 2012 compared to 2011 – the biggest increase in the United States.
Washington experienced the next biggest increase in volume with an 18.2% rise. Napa brought up the rear with a 3.4% increase.
Overall, the report found that the growth in sales of U.S. wines shipped directly to consumers was higher in 2012 than the overall growth of wine sales.
The report also found that small wineries accounted for more than half the value of shipments to consumers in 2012,
Unfortunately, in terms of wine shipped out, the report doesn’t give figures for specific Midwest states or the Midwest as a distinct wine shipping region. This is a pity! Hopefully they will next year!
But when it comes to wine shipped in, or which states receive the most wine by direct shipping, the report does refer to specific US states. Consumers in Kentucky are the thirstiest in the Midwest, with the volume of wine shipped to this state rising by up to 30% compared to 2011.

Also, our wine law columnist, Jamie J. Cox, examines direct shipping issues in her recent column. You can read that here.
