Ingredient Labeling in Wine
The San Francisco Chronicle’s wine writer, Jon Bonné, has added to the simmering debate over whether the labels on wine bottles should disclose all of the ingredients that go into making wine. The topic has come up again because one of California’s big winemakers, Ridge Vineyards, has a new label on its Zinfandel that actually admits they’ve ‘played Jesus’ and added water!
Bonné contrasts the reality of tartaric acid, egg whites and oak chip additions with the rustic, grapes under foot image of natural purity presented on many wine labels. He asks whether there should be the sort of full disclosure advocated by winemakers like Randall Grahm of Bonny Doon Vineyard in California, who started listing the ingredients in his wines a few years ago.
